Math Academy is a fantastic problem-solving app which will keep children engaged for a very long time. It’s presented as a game – similar to connect 4 – but children must use their mathematical skills to progress through the activities, which can become very addictive.
What The Children Do:
Children will be tasked with using numbers and symbols to create mathematical equations that equal zero.
It’s a very addictive and very challenging app which only allows progression once a task has been complete, so you can differentiate your activity via expected outcome.
The first task might see children start with three circles, each containing a number or symbol i.e. “2” “-” and “2”. Children must then create the equation 2-2 as this will give them the answer zero and enable them to progress onto the next level.
This app gradually becomes more and more difficult until children have to use their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills to create numerous equations. It’s very challenging but also very enjoyable.
How It Works:
Children have to use their finger to select the first number in the equation and then swipe across the numbers in symbols in the order they will be in the equation.
For example, children select 5 and then must swipe across 5×2-10 in that order to complete their equation without taking their finger off the iPad.
Why It’s Good:
Aside from being extremely addictive, the app is also very challenging. As there are so many different levels for the children to work through, all children will reach a point where they begin to struggle – which is ideal because children shouldn’t be completing work they find easy.
I can’t recommend this app highly enough as I feel it will engage the most reluctant learner and will challenge all children regardless of age or ability.
